What is Reiki?

Reiki  is a Japanese technique for relaxation, stress reduction, and healing through the laying on of hands. It’s based on the concept of a life force energy that flows within us, influencing our health and well-being. Reiki promotes balance; low energy can lead to illness, while high energy enhances happiness and health.

The term Reiki combines “Rei” (meaning “Higher Power” or “God’s Wisdom”) and “Ki” (referring to “life force energy”). Reiki is a spiritually guided energy that, when channeled, feels like a radiant glow, benefiting body, mind, emotions, and spirit.

History of Reiki

Reiki is believed to have been associated with Mikao Usui who is credited with rediscovering the root system now called Reiki. His tradition and methods were passed through several grandmasters of Reiki. Today, Reiki takes many forms, however, The Usui System of Natural Healing is still the form most widely practiced. Practitioners and Master Teachers are trained through an initiation process where Masters pass on their knowledge and expertise to their students.

Over the last 25 years, Reiki has been integrated into hospital and clinical settings. One of the first hospitals in the United States to offer Reiki was Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. In 1998, the hospital began offering Reiki to patients undergoing chemo and radiation. The program was a success, and Reiki was soon offered to patients in all areas of the hospital.

The medical community, worldwide, has continued to embrace and utilize the benefits of Reiki for both their patients and staff. This is due in part to increasing research supporting its effectiveness. In addition, many healthcare professionals are becoming more open to the use and benefits of complementary and integrative therapies. Reiki’s foundations are based on a holistic approach to integration and balance of mind, body, and spirit.

The Energy of Healing

Reiki is classified by the National Institute of Health as a form of complementary medicine and has been integrated into hundreds of hospitals and clinics nationwide including the Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins, the Mayo Clinic and The Children’s Hospital, Boston.

Reiki is often used to address physical, emotional, and mental imbalances, aiming to restore harmony and enhance one’s sense of balance and calmness. Because Reiki is spiritually guided, it can also be used as a method of spiritual exploration. Learning Reiki doesn’t require belief; it’s passed on through attunements given during classes by Reiki Masters and  Reiki’s non-religious nature emphasizes harmony and promotes peaceful living.

Reiki in Clinical Trials

A 2015 study published in the journal “Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine” found Reiki was effective in reducing pain and anxiety in patients with cancer.

A 2016 study published in the journal “Pain Medicine” found Reiki was effective in reducing pain and improving sleep quality in patients with chronic pain.

A 2017 study published in the journal “Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice” found Reiki was effective in reducing anxiety and depression.

In 2018 the “Journal of Holistic Nursing” reported Reiki was effective in improving sleep quality and reducing stress in patients with chronic pain.

Benefits of Reiki

There are many benefits to using Reiki in your life.  Some of the benefits include:

  • Reducing stress and anxiety
  • Relieving pain
  • Improving sleep quality
  • Stimulates the body’s immune system
  • Reducing stress-related symptoms such as headaches, digestive disorders, and muscle tension
  • Helping to cope with chronic pain
  • Supporting the healing process after surgery or other medical procedures
  • Helping to manage the side effects of cancer treatment
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Improving mood
  • Promoting and enhancing relaxation and a sense of well-being
  • Providing comfort and support

How Reiki works

Reiki is based on the belief that there is a life force energy that flows through all living things. When this energy is blocked or disrupted, it can lead us into an unwell state of being. Reiki helps to restore the flow of this energy by rebalancing the body’s energy centers, which can help to promote healing and well-being.

The formally trained and experienced practitioner is “attuned” to the energy and blocks of the person with whom they are working. Reiki does not draw from the practitioner’s energy; it works through the client’s own energy systems. Reiki can’t help you control situations, but it can help you stay aligned with your higher self.

Conclusion

Reiki is a gentle relaxing, safe, non-invasive, and effective therapy that can be used to treat a variety of conditions. It is a complementary therapy that can be used alongside conventional medical treatments. It should not be used as a substitute for consultation with a physician or a psychotherapist. It has been shown that Reiki can increase the efficacy of other types of healing.

If you are already in good health, regular Reiki treatments can enhance your ability to respond to stress and serve as a form of preventative medicine. It’s good self-care.

-IN-PERSON SESSION-

Description of a Typical Session

A session is usually 60 to 90 minutes long. A discussion will usually take place during an initial session with a Reiki Practitioner. They will describe the session to the client, give the client an opportunity to discuss any particular problems or issues they are experiencing and ask them what they are hoping to achieve from their session. For the actual session, the client will rest comfortably on a massage table on their back with their shoes removed. Reiki can be performed with the client sitting comfortably in a chair as well. Unlike massage therapy, no articles of clothing are removed and a client is always fully clothed; loose, comfortable clothing is suggested. A session can either be hands-on, where a Practitioner will apply a light touch during the session, or hands-off where they will hold their hands slightly above your body. If a client prefers not to be touched they can indicate this to the practitioner before they begin. The session will then proceed with the Reiki Practitioner moving through specific standard Reiki hand positions beginning at the person’s head or feet. A recipient of Reiki might feel a warming sensation or a tingling during the session or nothing at all but sheer relaxation. The session should be very pleasant, relaxing and invigorating.

What is Reiki used to Treat?

Reiki is a great tool for stress reduction and relaxation. Many people use Reiki for wellness. Reiki is not a cure for a disease or illness, but it may assist the body in creating an environment to facilitate healing. Reiki is a great tool to use as a complement to traditional medicine and is practiced in many hospitals and medical care settings.

Many times a client, after experiencing Reiki treatments, will wish to learn Reiki to work with this energy themselves by taking a Reiki I course. This can be beneficial as they may then use this stress reduction and relaxation tool anytime they wish when cost would prohibit it otherwise.

What is a Reiki Healer?

Not just anyone can call themselves a Reiki Healer. Professional Reiki Healers must complete a series of courses, beginning with Reiki Level 1, often continuing through Reiki Level 2, then onto the Reiki Master Course and practicum. Some Reiki Healers choose to continue their education to become Reiki Master Teachers, where they can empower others with healing through Reiki.

How long is a Reiki session?

A session is generally 60-90 minutes.

Will I be lying down on a massage table or sitting?

Reiki is usually performed on a client who is fully reclined comfortably on a massage table. It also may be performed on a client who is semi-reclined on a massage chair or recliner. If you have mobility or pain issues please communicate these to your Practitioner so they may make you your most comfortable for the session. If you feel more comfortable seated in a chair, that is also an option that I provide.

Am I clothed during my Reiki session?

Yes. Unlike a massage therapy session, you will be fully clothed. Unless, of course, your Reiki Practitioner is also a licensed Massage Therapist and you are receiving both massage and Reiki, then you would speak with your practitioner about your preference. But for a Reiki session only, you will want to wear loose-fitting comfortable clothing.

Will the Reiki Practitioner’s hands touch me in any way?

At your option. Reiki may be done with a light gentle pressure static touch or the Practitioner’s hands may be a few inches/centimeters above your body at the hand positions with no actual touch. There are standard hand placements beginning at your head or feet, avoiding all sensitive body parts. Let your Practitioner know prior to the session which you prefer, light touch or no touch. My main technique is "no touch" it is not needed.

Is your first session the longest?

At your first session, you should plan to arrive 10-15 minutes early so the practitioner can go over the session, discuss your goals for the session, complete paperwork, etc.

Is one session enough or will I need a series of sessions?

One session is a great start! You will see for yourself how Reiki makes you feel, if it is relaxing, if you feel more clarity after the session. Many people, after trying one session, return back for a series sessions to progressively work on their current wellness goals.

Is Reiki for an acute condition or a chronic condition?

If you have an acute condition you should seek out a licensed medical professional immediately. If you have a chronic or current issue, Reiki can be an excellent complement to your health or wellness plan.

What will I feel during the session?

Most clients feel a sense of relaxation and peace. The mind may feel calm and your physical body should feel relaxed. Reiki is so relaxing that sometimes clients may fall asleep during the session. Don’t worry though, you will still receive all of the benefits of the session, sleeping or awake.

Is there talking during the session?

Usually, a session is done without talking and the practitioner may have soft ambient music playing in the background to aid in your relaxation. If you want to communicate something to your practitioner during the session, such as if you are cold or too warm, if you would like them to adjust the music, if you are feeling a sensation you would like to discuss, if something feels uncomfortable for you, if you have a question or issue, then do speak up at any time during the session. Your practitioner wants the best for you and wants to make your session the best experience possible. Also, your practitioner may ask you after the session if there is anything you would like to share and you may do so at your option. This is good feedback for your practitioner’s notes for planning your next session.

What does Reiki healing feel like?

At the practitioner’s hand placements, you may feel a very slight tingling, heat, or energy, or nothing at all. The sensations or lack of are not a barometer of the Reiki, they are just how your particular body senses energy. You may feel peace and calm in your mind or physically in general. It is different for all clients but deep relaxation is almost always felt.

Can I drive after my session?

Yes, after the relaxation of your session you will be in your full awake state, but possibly feel more grounded and centered. A five-minute brisk walk to your car or other transportation will add to your groundedness. Be sure that you are fully awake and alert before driving in general.

After I leave my session, should I do anything special?

Please drink plenty of water to hydrate your body as your body’s energy system may be moving at a more optimum rate, so please care for yourself with water and healthy food during the day. It is beneficial to spend some quiet time that day or evening after your session to journal or to contemplate as you may have some insights and further mental clarity as your body continues to process the Reiki session.

Are there any medical conditions where I should not receive Reiki?

Reiki is a wonderful complement to a health or wellness plan. It supports your work with your primary care providers. Reiki cannot harm. Reiki is safe for EVERYONE, AND EVERYTHING.

If I have the flu or contagious disease should I have a Reiki session?

No PLEASE. As a kindness to your Practitioner please wait until you are feeling better and not contagious before scheduling a session.

Can you have too much Reiki?

No, Reiki is beneficial and works with your body’s energy. In fact, your own energetic body is in control of how much Reiki it wants and needs during the session and utilizes it accordingly. Like breathing, you will comfortably take in as much as you need to support yourself.

-DISTANT SESSION-

Experience the power of Reiki healing to release blockages, reduce stress, and promote physical and emotional healing. Feel more balanced and aligned. And YES! Through time & space (Distant)  -DISTANT SESSION- Reiki refers to the energy that makes you human, the essence of who you are. Reiki also refers to a system of practices that includes hands-on and remote healing sessions, which is often what people think of when they think of Reiki. In Distant Reiki Healing Sessions, you are guided to get in touch with your own inner resources through direct experience. Distant Reiki healing sessions support overall balance and a connection to the energy that is your true self, impacting your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health. The most common effects people report after a Reiki session are a decrease in stress and pain, but the possibilities are too many to list.

What to Expect

A brief conversation (over the phone) discuss a time & day for your session, discuss any issues, goals or questions you may have. I will also go over a brief intake questionnaire to address any medical history. On that scheduled day and time I ask that you lie-down or sit in a comfortable position where you will not be disturbed for the duration of the time (60-90 minutes). I also ask and recommend that you remove any metal jewelry that day. After the session I recommend you drink plenty of water, rest and well the following few days. Your session will then be conducted and completed.

How Distant Reiki Works - Remote Reiki Sessions

Remote Reiki, also known as Distant Reiki, is a powerful practice that involves sending healing energy across time and space to support physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being. This form of healing transcends physical boundaries, allowing you to experience its benefits from the comfort of your own space.

Namaste.
